What began as a hidden gem shared among artists, musicians, writers, and travelers has grown into one of the most celebrated handcrafted mezcals in the world. With roots tied to smoky late nights, underground gatherings, and the legendary Café No Sé in Antigua, Guatemala, Ilegal Mezcal carries a story as bold as its flavor.
Founded by John Rexer in the early 2000s, Ilegal was originally smuggled from Oaxaca to supply his clandestine mezcal bar, Café No Sé. Sourced from villages throughout Oaxaca — including Tlacolula, Santa Catarina Minas, Santiago Matatlán, and beyond — the spirit quickly developed a cult following for its authentic craftsmanship and unforgettable character.
Today, every bottle still honors those origins, proudly marked with the words: “Originally produced for: Café No Sé, Mezcal Bar.”
