Join us as we welcome Albert Costa, Celler Vall Llach’s co-owner and winemaker, for an exquisite and rare look into his esteemed winery.
Celler Vall Llach, established in the early 1990s by Enric Costa and Lluís Llach, has become a distinguished name in the DOC Priorat region of southern Catalonia, Spain. Their first vintage, produced in 1998 and released in late 2000, marked the beginning of their journey as a prominent figure in Priorat. The winery is committed to high standards of quality and showcasing the unique terroir of Porrera, aiming to capture the essence of the region's steep terrain and soils in their wines.
The winery is comprised of two notable structures: La Final, recognized as the oldest winemaking site in the village's central square, and Cal Baldrich, a renovated mansion conducive to the aging process of their wines. Vall Llach emphasizes controlled microproduction, focusing on quality over quantity with meticulous supervision throughout the winemaking process to ensure exclusivity in their offerings.
The distinctive characteristics of Priorat’s rugged landscape, coupled with its steep slopes and llicorella slate soils, greatly enhance the grapes cultivated in the region. The combination of a harsh yet temperate climate further contributes to producing musts of exceptional quality. Vall Llach cultivates century-old vineyards primarily growing Carignan and Grenache, alongside newer varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, resulting in wines that are both complex and unique.
Vall Llach credits the exceptional quality of its wines to the unique interplay between the vines and the llicorella slate. This close relationship, supported by the dedicated efforts of local grape growers, enables the winery to craft wines that genuinely reflect the identity of Priorat.
