Our most preeminent wine dinner series returns this Spring — join us every Wednesday for a new, unique, and intimate wine dinner featuring in-depth conversations with those who pour their heart and soul into winemaking around the world.
Join us on Wednesday, 20 May, as we welcome Tancredi Biondi Santi from Jacopo Biondi Santi (Castello di Montepò).
Forests, hills, and an ancient manor: Maremma, gentle and undulating, stretching to the horizon amid fields, olive groves, and vineyards. A home to preserve the culture of the grapevine. It’s an authentic and noble Tuscany at Castello di Montepò, in the Scansano countryside, where the lands turn into legendary vineyards.
Surrounded by forests, olive groves, and the small hills of Maremma, the ancient manor has been an impregnable fortress defending the feudal borders since medieval times, a mission it still pursues today by protecting the 600 hectares of the estate, including 50 of vineyards. It’s where Jacopo Biondi Santi found the ideal conditions for the vine-terroir interaction to fulfill his ambitious project of enhancing viticulture.
The Biondi Santi family has earned a place in the tradition of Italian wine thanks to the lively and passionate inventiveness that has distinguished them since their beginnings. The roots of this brilliant adventure date back to the 19th century when Ferruccio Biondi Santi planted the first vineyard in Montalcino with vines from a selected Sangiovese clone, known as Sangiovese Grosso or Brunello. This marked the first step towards a new winemaking approach that would soon become part of Italian wine history.
In the heart of Maremma, Jacopo Biondi Santi and his sons are dedicated to continuing a story of Italian quality wine, passing it down to new generations.
In the current generation, Tancredi works alongside his father, Jacopo, at Castello di Montepò, the family’s estate in Maremma, Tuscany. Under his leadership, the family has shifted focus from their historic Brunello brand toward crafting terroir-driven wines at Montepò, emphasizing precision in vineyard parcels, soil study, and clonal expression. He often speaks about wine not as a mere asset, but as an act of devotion — comparing speculative buying to “being a broker, not a wine lover.” The shift in strategy was partly driven by the family’s decision, in 2019, to scale back their role in the original Biondi Santi label when a majority stake was sold to the French EPI Group.
Tancredi is regarded as a custodian of tradition while simultaneously steering toward innovation — maintaining respect for the family’s roots in Montalcino while pushing boundaries in Maremma. He is active in international wine forums, tastings, and interviews, championing the idea that wine should evolve without losing its soul. His work bridges past and future, preserving heritage while exploring new expressions, micro-terroir segmentation, and sustainable practices.
